Today, pragmatism continues to influence the development of technological and scientific applications, as well as the design and evaluation of curriculums and educational programs. Around 1870, the word "pragmatic" was first used in the United States. William James (1842 to 1910) is believed to be the first person to using the term pragmatic in print. He is regarded as the father of modern psychology and the first pragmatist to be a founder. In his book "The Present Dilemma in Philosophy' which was published in 1907, he described a fundamental dichotomy in philosophy. He outlines a conflict between two different ways of thinking the other being empiricist and based on 'the facts' and the other that is apriori-based and appeals to the concept of ratiocination. He predicted that pragmatism will provide a bridge to these opposing tendencies.
For James the truth is only insofar as it works. His metaphysics is open to the possibility that there could be beyond the realm of our comprehension. He acknowledges, too, that pragmatism does not reject religion as a principle. Religions can be valid for those who hold them.
One of the most prominent figures among the classical pragmatists was John Dewey (1859 to 1952). He is renowned for his wide-ranging contributions to many different areas of philosophical inquiry such as social theory, ethics law, philosophy of education, aesthetics and the philosophy of religion. In the last years of his career, the philosopher began to think of pragmatics in the context of the philosophy of democracy.
